This course will focus on design and engineering for developing data-intensive applications that deal with or produce different types of data at a large-scale. Such different types of data may include spatial data, time series, text, web, social media, images, audio, video, sensors, and any other related forms of data in digital media. Data modeling and management techniques will be discussed to elevate data analysis techniques and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of data-intensive applications.

Covers research and design of virtual reality and 3-dimensional user interface systems, their history, and applications. Topics include VR hardware (display and input devices), and VR software (e.g., how to design effective UIs for 3D systems). This includes discussion of interaction techniques for virtual environment navigation, and virtual object selection and manipulation, as well as human factors relating to the design of such systems. We will also discuss methods for experimental evaluation/validation of VR system effectiveness. Students will develop and evaluate interactive 3D systems using a modern game engine (e.g., Unity) and 3D hardware devices (e.g., Oculus Rift, Razer Hydra).
